Let's meet my favorite Miss Universe contestants whose heritage is from Central Africa. They are from various ethnic groups and tribes native to the region of Central Africa. Because of their region's colonial history, these African beauties speak both African and European languages.
Elizabeth Tavares represented the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the Miss Universe 1968 pageant held in Miami, Florida. Competing as "Miss Congo", Elizabeth is fluent in French and hails from Kinshasa, where she was working as a saleslady at the time. Being Congo's first representative in the Miss Universe pageant, she became notable among the journalists covering the pageant and was also popular among the other contestants.
By 1972, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has changed its name to the Republic of Zaire. Honorine Ombayi Mukuta became Zaire's delegate in the Miss Universe 1972 pageant held in Dorado, Puerto Rico. With her vivaciousness and charm, Ombayi became popular among the other contestants and was voted as Miss Unity.
Benita Murekatete Kayonga represented Zaire in the Miss Universe 1985 pageant held in Miami, Florida. Hailing from Kinshasa, Benita was a high school student at the time and was aspiring to become a secretary and a cosmetologist. Aside from French, she is also fluent in Swahili and Lingala. On the pageant finals, she was announced as among the Top 10 semi-finalists and became a crowd favorite for her charm and her unique, intricate hairstyle. The statuesque African beauty eventually finished as 2nd runner-up. Benita soon became Zaire's delegate in the Miss World 1985 pageant held in London, United Kingdom. Being Zaire's first representative in the Miss World pageant, she became a favorite among the press and audience. She eventually finished among the Top 15 semi-finalists.
Aimee Likobe Dobala became Zaire's representative in the Miss Universe 1986 pageant held in Panama City, Panama. Hailing from Kinshasa, she was a college student pursuing a literature degree and was aspiring to become a model. The towering African beauty became a favorite during the pageant and finished among the Top 10 semi-finalists.
