1974
Indonesia debuted in the Miss Universe 1974 pageant in Manila, Philippines and was represented by Nia Kurniasih Ardikoesoema. Hailing from Bandung, Nia was appointed by Andy's Beauty Salon to become the country's first representative in the pageant.
2005
Artika Sari Devi won the title of Puteri Indonesia 2004 (Princess of Indonesia). Hailing from the province of Banka Belitung,
Artika is a law graduate and also decorates cakes in her spare time. The stunning beauty soon represented Indonesia in the Miss Universe 2005 pageant held in Bangkok, Thailand. Her participation in the international pageant caused controversy back home in Indonesia at that time; many local conservative and religious groups oppose the participation of women in beauty pageants. On the pageant finals, Artika was announced as among the Top 15 semi-finalists, marking Indonesia's first successful placement in the Miss Universe pageant.
After the pageant, Artika returned home to Indonesia and became active in the local entertainment industry an actress. She soon expanded her career as a songwriter and producer.
2012
Maria Selena won the title of Puteri Indonesia 2011 (Princess of Indonesia). Hailing from the province of Central Java, the porcelain-skinned beauty was pursuing a business degree at the time she won the national title. Aside from doing modeling jobs, Selena is also a member of the Indonesian women's basketball team. Selena soon became Indonesia's representative in the Miss Universe 2012 pageant held in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her national costume, which depicts the Garuda in the colors of the Indonesian flag, was among the Top 10 Best in National Costume.
2013
Whulandary won the title of Puteri Indonesia 2013 (Princess of Indonesia). Whulandary hails from the province of West Sumatra and is of Minangkabau heritage. She relocated to Jakarta to pursue a modeling career and has participated in many modeling competitions, locally and abroad. At the time she won the national title, she was pursuing a degree in public relations while continuing her career as a model. Whulandary soon became Indonesia's delegate in the Miss Universe 2013 pageant held in Moscow, Russia. Noted for her exotic looks and strong stage presence, she became a favorite in the pageant. Her national costume, which is inspired by the Reog Ponorogo traditional dance, was among the Top 5 Best in National Costume. On the pageant finals, Whulandary was announced as among the Top 15 semi-finalists.
After the pageant, Whulandary became active in the local entertainment industry in Indonesia, appearing as an actress in films and TV shows.
2014
Elvira Devinamira won the title of Puteri Indonesia 2014 (Princess of Indonesia). At the time she won the title, Elvira was pursuing a law degree while doing modeling jobs. The statuesque beauty from Surabaya soon became Indonesia's representative in the Miss Universe 2014 pageant held in Miami, Florida. A favorite during the pageant, Elvira was announced as among the Top 15 semi-finalists. Her national costume which is inspired by the Borubodur Buddhist temples, was shortlisted in the Top 5 and eventually won Best National Costume via online fan votes.
After the pageant, Elvira returned to Indonesia and became active in the local entertainment industry as an actress, appearing in films and TV shows.
2020
Ayu Maulida Putri won the title of Puteri Indonesia 2020 (Princess of Indonesia). Nicknamed "Ayuma", she hails from Surabaya and descends from Javanese nobility, having the customary title of Raden Roro. At the time she won the national title, she has already completed a law degree and has done modeling jobs, both locally and abroad. Ayuma is also involved in charity and manages an organization in assisting communities in remote rural areas. The towering beauty soon became Indonesia's delegate in the Miss Universe 2020 pageant held in Hollywood, Florida. A favorite during the pageant, she finished among the Top 21 semi-finalists.
